Beautiful Imperfections

When the monster discovers Felix and Agatha, he notices that they are both beautiful human beings.
The monster becomes depressed when he comes to the realization that no one will ever love him. However, the monster's low self esteem does not affect the way he treats others.

Can insecurities have a positive impact? What could cause them to be viewed in a negative light? How did the imperfections of the monster contribute to his character?

  1. Imperfections are really what make a person unique. A person without insecurities is boring, and perfect is boring because it is one-dimensional. Imperfections are what make human beings the fascinatingly complex beings that we are. Oftentimes, people criticize others for their because they know that they are far from perfect and would like to feel better about themselves; or, they see that person's imperfections in themselves and criticize that person for their imperfections when they are, in fact, criticizing themselves. The imperfections of the monster allow the audience to relate to his character. Oftentimes, we feel like we do not belong in the world because of imperfections that make us stand out, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse; our imperfections, or quirks, are what cause us to be the subject of mock and ridicule by others. That is how the monster feels since his various outer imperfections are what make him shunned from society and enhance his inner beauty; thus, it makes him a relatable character.

  2. Yes insecurities can have a positive impact on a persons behavior. However they can be viewed negatively by the person with the insecurity and by other people who see it. The person with the insecurity may see themselves as a lesser being and the person who notices an insecurity may take advantage of the person and try to lower that persons self-esteem. Frankenstein's insecurities made him a humble character who wanted to better himself. His insecurities are what made him the gentle creature that he was and made him see the value of life in other living things. The insecurities are what made him less of a monster, and if it wasn't for them he may not have had the same attitude.

  3. Agreeing with Derrione and Jonathan. Insecurities can have a positive impact. They can also have a negative impact but it makes one stability. An individual without uncertainty is not human or rather banal and monotonous. Insecurities are for people to feel better about themselves while censuring others. The monsters imperfection makes it understandable to humans and anyone who feels like an outcast. The imperfection done by him led to his insecurities due to the fact of his distinction. Making everyone despise him.

  4. Insecurities can always have a positive impact. A person that has the insecurity can view it either way. It depends all on how a person reacts to it. An insecurity can bring a person fear. Insecurities can also bring one strength. Often the person that sees the insecurity, it has a negative affect. An insecurity is often reacted to by being ridiculed. The imperfections and insecurities gave the "monster" human characteristics.. A monster is portrayed as a beast who has an image of a careless, blank, vicious creature and it is almost impossible for a human to have those characteristics. The monsters imperfections gave the monster feelings which softened the image of a beast.

    1. good point I really like how you describe a monster as a soft person and not a beast , I can relate that to dont judge a book by its cover.

  5. Insecurities can not have a positive impact because most of the ones individuals have are because of how one view self and others.Insecurities can have a negative impact because it can affect everything someone does, for example people who bully tend to have insecurities within themself so to cover them up they take it out upon other people. The imperfections within the monster contributed to his character by making it seem that it is in the position of the bully because it takes its anger out on innocent people by killing them and also it seems that the monster is in the position of the individual being bullied because Frankenstein constantly puts him down by calling him an "abhorred monster !" And devil when all the monster wants is to be accepted .

  6. Insecurities and imperfections can help a person find their true selves in a sense. Insecurities and imperfections cause a person to grow spiritually and mentally more to accept themselves the way they are. Insecurities and imperfections can be seen in a negative light when someone brings them up in a negative way or rejects you because of your imperfections. The monsters imperfections and deformity causes him to become shunned by the human race but the monster continuously tries to be friendly with the humans with no success. His hatred for the humans gets strong but he still accepts his insecurities. "I could...educate him as my companion and friend, I should not be so desolate in this peopled earth" (Shelley 126). Disregarding his insecurities and imperfections, the monster still tries to gain a friend.

  7. Insecurities can have a positive impact, in the fact that they can often maintain a sense of humility within an individual. They also have the ability to motivate, to keep one striving for a self-actualizaton/satisfaction. However, insecurities often manifest as negative and sometimes destructive feelings toward oneself, causing them to be broadcasted in a bad light the majority of the time. The insecurities of the monster, simply gave him not only a factor of realism, but a humanistic quality that allowed the audience to empathize with him.

  8. Insecurities, although seen negatively, can have a positive impact because it differentiates individuals from one another making them unique and special. Insecurities are often viewed in the wrong light because not all insecurities are commonly seen causing individuals to feel unloved, and most insecurities aren't promoted in a positive light like most have recently become. Lastly, the monsters imperfections contributed to his audience not exactly his character because it allowed the reader to relate to his desire of wanting to be loved and the longing for a friend, however his imperfections cause him to be the monster he is and cause him to be judge and viewed negatively by society.

  9. I agree whole heartedly. Insecurities can lead to personal growth but they can also be used for the detriment of one as well. Society uses ones insecurities as a way to break them Down and ridicule them as seen in Frankenstein . The monsters imperfections isolated him and negatively effected the way he acted towards others.

  10. A person's insecurities could have two impacts on his/her life. For the most part, insecurities could have a positive impact on a person's life. I say this because insecurities teaches a person who they really are and what makes them different from everybody else. Worldwide personality variations makes for a better world because everyday a new adventure can be lived with different characters. Insecurities can help a person because people can work on this insecurities to make make them a better person. Once people get over these insecurities, they can finally live their life the way they want without having to worry about what other people think about them. This leads to better self esteem and a a better life. But on the other hand, insecurities could have a negative impact because some people cannot handle the pressure of what other people think of them. Some people worry about other other people's opinions so so much that their life takes a downward spiral to a state of deep depression. To avoid this, peope have to learn how to deal with their insecurities so they can live a happy life. People must remember that nobody is perfect.

  11. Whether or not insecurities have a positive or negative affect depends on the person. When people hear the word "insecurities", they automatically assume the worst when they do not have to. Insecurities allows some to recognize what makes them more special or unique than others. On the other hand, insecurities also have the power to lower a person's self-esteem and make them feel inferior to those around them. In Frankenstein, the monster's insecurities about his appearance pushes him to believe he would never be loved by anyone. However, his insecurities also allows him to be kind to others.

  12. Insecurities can play a major roll on our teens today. Insecurities does have a impact on females and males lives today because we try to fit in or look at these men and women today and believe that we should be like them. But thats not necessarily true simply because some teens may not have anyone to look up to or push them to be better people. Also they will point out their flaws and see whats not right about their appearance and try to change because what they see on tv, in magazines etc. But our insecurities makes us different and make us our own person inside and out. postive insecurities makes us think otherwise just like Frankenstein he had insecurities about himself and thats what led him to be good and kind to others and thats what our generation need to learn.

  13. Insecurities always have a negative impact on a person. Insecurities can hinder growth and development. Insecurities are viewed in a negative light because of the way most of them are bestowed upon a person. Usually, insecurities develop when a billy preys upon a person's physical or mental appearance. The monster's hideous physical appearance contributed to his inner beauty.

  14. An insecurity can never be perceived as something positive. This is because an insecurity has to do with an conflicting disapproval within oneself. This emotion can be developed based off of how a person sees society and compare it to themselves. Society today likes to believe that everyone must be alike or similar in some sort or else they will become alienated. An insecurity can be seen in a negative light in several ways. This is because it involves the dissatisfaction of either an internal or external liking dealing oneself.
