Being "good" and "evil" is not so much in your character as it is in how you use your gifts and talents. For example, in the Harry Potter series, two characters, Severus Snape and Tom Riddle/Lord Voldemort were sorted into the same House, Slytherin, yet they used their talents and gifts for different purposes. Riddle used his ambition and cunning to terrorize the wizarding world and attempt to wipe out the whole "race" of Muggle-borns whereas Snape used his ambition and cunning to bring down a dark lord and protect an innocent boy. Riddle used his gifts for good whereas Snape used his gifts for evil. Additionally, two prominent men of history, Adolf Hitler and Martin Luther King, Jr. both had a talent for leadership yet each man used it for a different purpose. Hitler used his talent for leadership to wipe out an entire race of people whereas King used his talent for leadership to bring all races of people together. This is another example of one man using his gift for an evil purpose and the other man using his gift for a benevolent purpose.
ReplyDeleteI believe being "good" or "evil" is not a natural trait, but is developed by the society and environment that you live in. Stephen R. Covey once said, “Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.” This basically means that depending on what you "sow" in someone or instill in them, especially at a young age when children are malleable, it will develop into their life. For example, if a child is raised in a violent surrounding, then they will most likely be violent when they are older. Everyone's view on "good" and "evil" also varies on factors of surroundings and what they were taught as a child. “We see the world, not as it is, but as we are──or, as we are conditioned to see it” (Stephen R. Covey). Once again Covey states another fact that applies to this topic because choices, decisions, and views on subjects all depend on perception and how experiences that could greatly change one person's view from another. Therefore, good or evil is a learned behavior and the classification of good or evil is a viewpoint based of experiences.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kashaad and Derrione. I believe that people are made evil by their environment, tim period, and most importantly, family traits. An example for an evil coming from an environment is an intelligent black male growing up in the ghetto. He could use his brain to contribute to the community or let his community get the best of him. His environment could could lead him to a life of crime and evils. Family traits can contribute to a person being evil because some genes are passed on through each generation that have negative effect on the world. These genes include the ones that make people sociopaths and psychopaths.
ReplyDeleteOne isn't born good nor bad for that matter just as one isn't more a racist. It is something instilled in one's lifestyle. Good and evil are taught rather than just labeled on one at birth. The tough times one has endured can contribute to whether they are good or evil. It is all on what the person takes from the situation. For example, a women who experienced domestic abuse could choose to retaliate on the man who abused her or she could start a foundation and help other women who are going through the same situation. One's morals play a big role on picking the path of good or evil.
ReplyDeletePeople grow up to see life in different ways, therefore they are not born good or evil. New born babies have no knowledge on what good or evil is and have no intention on how they will grow up. It is the people, environment, and experiences they go through that makes them who they are, whether some will only be shown good in life and others will only see the evil.

ReplyDeleteIt is my conviction that people aren't born good or evil instead ignorant, which means lacking in knowledge or unaware (people tend to give it a negative connotation, which it doesn't have). Considering that children must be instilled the contrast between moral and amoral behavior, it is implied that good and evil are learned behaviors; people shape our ethics not our genes. A human's moral code operates as a scale, one that can be easily tipped since "all it takes is a little push" as the Joker once mentioned. Factors that influence the scale are our guardians, society (herd mentality), and conscience which are immediate, secondary, and primary influences respectively.
ReplyDeleteExamples coinciding with morality and immorality:
1. Stewie Griffin was seemingly born with an innate desire to do away with his mother (Family Guy), this is presumably satirical of the subject matter. Lol.
2. Recently, The Huffington Post published an article that involved a child (age 7) dressing as a KKK member for Halloween, for it was a "tradition" as the mother put it. There are a myriad of instances, where a child has little to no ability to recognize immorality because of their ignorance and their parents.
3. Bane saved a young Talia al Ghul from the dangers of a prison, sadly leaving himself to be brutally mangled by his inmates. His disfigurement along with the hope-forsaken pit he languished in are immediate factors in his emotional damage and loss of morals. Since he didn't "die a hero" he lived "long enough to see [himself] become the villain" (The Dark Knight Rises).
*Our environment can have severe consequences on our moral compasses.*
4. In a 2000 study, Pediatrician Dr. Robert H. DuRant gave light to the strong link between exposure to violence and adolescent use of violence, thus, he concluded that violence is a learned behavior. According to his study, violent tendencies also stem from harsh corporal punishment and physical abuse.
5. Siblings, Azula and Zuko are flawless representatives of this subject. Azula took after her father’s cruel demeanor; she was an apple that never fell far from the tree. Zuko, although morally ambiguous for a time, was instilled humane principles by his mother and uncle.
6. In an article T.N. Turner outlines six methods which he calls the six "E's" of character (morality) education: example, explanation, exhortation (praise and pep talks), ethos (ethical environment), experience, and expectation of excellence and therefore answers the question: How do we develop values?
*Ethics are like the states of water, upon birth they are gaseous (molecularly unstable), then they will steadily solidify (molecules will stabilize) or remain in their gaseous form. *Morals are initially formulated through child development yet the process' end is often indefinite and continues into adulthood.*
No figure, religion, or government can deliberately dictate what is "good" and what is "evil", though it has been examined that through nearly unanimous accord things that constitute good or evil can be established. However, the criterion that authenticates "good" and "evil" should be determined through the medium of intention and mutual perception, in order to be liberated from bias. There are ideas that have reached humanity's acceptance such as the evil rape or the good of self-sacrifice. A recurrent issue is the confoundedness people have when asked: What is good and evil? Or what is justice? Social divisions and disputes on global scales constantly stem from the open-endedness and subjectivity of these terms.
People are not born good or evil. They are born neutral to the the two trait. Good and evil are behaviors that are picked from people who influence a said person. No one is born to lie, steal, and kill. And everyone is not born a saint, however everyone is born innocent. In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass speaks on how while he was a child him and his masters children and other white children would get along quite fine and even make deals with each other. However, he goes on to say that as they grew older the evils of slavery began to take control and the feelings toward one another began to change. The children were not born to hate slaves, but they were taught to hate slaves. That does not mean a person cannot change because later in the book Douglass is sent to a new master and mistress. When they first encounter each other the mistress reaches out to Douglass with open arms and even began to teach him how to read, which was highly frowned upon. However her feelings toward Douglass changes when her husband gets angry an tells her to never teach him again, after this incident her and Douglass' relationship is never the same. She begins to run him off and assault him, she was an angel turned demon because of the evils she was taught by her husband.
ReplyDeletePeople are born neither good or evil, everyone is born "neutral ( Anonymous). They are most likely raised to be either good, evil or both but not naturally on purpose. It is our environment that shapes one into the aspects of which they grow up to be. People have all types of good and evil instilled in them. That is neutrality, which makes a human stand up straight. For example everyone can be selfish and giving at the same time. Everyone is not perfect so the good and evil can always confuse one. Another example money, that equals good and bad. If one obtains money its gives the illusion of power and greed. Everyone is guilty of that, it is what the society taught us.

ReplyDeletePeople are not “born good” nor are they ‘born bad”. They are born in between, neutral. “Good” and “Evil” are learned behaviors classified by our society: parents, elders, peers, role models, even our religious beliefs. These behaviors are adopted depending on environment and how one is raised up. Young children do not know right from wrong or good from evil, but they pick up these behaviors from their environment. Young children do typically “bad” things like run around, scream, bite, and kick, unless they are taught early to not do these things. People have to be taught at a young age in order to continue in their later years.
ReplyDeletePeople are born neither good or evil according to the world. Using biblical references since there are plenty of biblical allusions in Frankenstein, people are born bad or born evil. The bible says that ALL people are born into sin. From there you try your best to get closer to God. God's son, Jesus Christ, is known to be perfect or the best "good" person there is. Out of the wound of your mother, for Christians and people that believe in God, you are born bad. From a child your instincts are evil, selfish, and disrespectful but it is classified as cute, funny, and immature. That is why you are taught to do good things. Now for people who have no idea what it is I'm speaking of, people are born neutral. Lets just say that people are not born good.
ReplyDeletePeople are born neither good nor bad. It is how one is raised or the surroundings of a person that causes them to be good or bad. A person them self, decides whether they want to be good of bad based on their actions. A bully is one example. No one is born a bully. However, things one faces can cause them to become a bully. Bullies sometimes are abused by their parents or other people, picked on by classmates, and sometimes bullied themselves. Those troubles, make bullies who they are and become a bully to face their hardships.
ReplyDeletePeople are not born to be "good" or "evil". From birth children are taught to be good or bad but in the end it is their choice whether or not to go by how they are raised. To be good or evil is indeed taught but in different ways and methods. It could be directly taught or indirectly taught. Directly taught could mean someone would literally teach how to behave a certain way (i.e. parents, teachers, priests, nuns, siblings and etc). Indirectly taught could be that it is learned from afar by observation and practice (monkey see, monkey do) and it may be entirely unintentional. To be classified as good and evil is something that depends on who ever is judging and how they are judging a person. The Monster could not really be classified as evil because of the fact that he was abandoned and lacked guidance on right and wrong.
ReplyDeleteOne can never truly know if a person will be good or evil when born. Good and evil are offered to people, in which one must be chosen. Destiny now comes into effect where only a person can decide what they want. In the movie, The Cell (2007) a murder's past is explained showing how he came to be evil. Years of abuse from his father, a lously uncareful mother and corruption from his peers created this murderer. All of these events prove a common truth that the environment and role are the greastest deciding factors of good and evil.
ReplyDeleteThe performance of good or evil is a learned behavior by individuals. The individual themselves regulate the competence of each category based on their personal experience within the society or their surroundings. All persons are born neutral however, it is the environment that influences their decision on the path which they decide to travel. If a person is exposed to more evil then they are likely to oppose the righteous path and vice versa. A baby ,for example, does not apprehend the good and bad behaviors when they are new to the world. However, as they encounter one more than the other they come to favor that behavior.

ReplyDeleteAgreeing with my fellow classmates, individuals are not born good, it is said in the Bible in Psalms 51:5 that, "in sin did my mother conceive me" speaking for all men, therefore mankind will have a continuous sinful nature, proving that no man is "born good". Because of this a good or bad behavior is learned from other individuals, society, and one's surroundings. Being said the classification of being good or bad is defined by oneself and what they observe and are taught. These traits can be viewed in oneself and one's surroundings, and what each individual gleams as good or evil.
ReplyDeleteIndividuals are not born "good", however, at a young age, parents begin to instill "good" behavior in their children. As a result, the children learn to behave and make decisions based on the example that was set for them. "Birds of a feather, flock together," explains how one's decisions can be jaded by outside influences. If parents do not instill mannerable behavior in their children, it will manifest itself through the children. Ultimately, one's household limitations decide if the individual will be "good" or "evil". Society is credited with the distinction between "good" and "evil". This is exemplified in everyday life. Completing volunteer work, "Paying it Forward", and even donating blood are considered "good actions" by society. These actions are classified as "good" because of the supernatural belief of karma. Most times crime is viewed as "evil" by society because individuals will lose their peace of mind. More importantly, some will lose lives. The separation of "good" and "evil" is simply based on the morality of one's upbringing.
ReplyDeleteI think it all depends on the environment that he/she grew up around and observing others. If he/she grew up in a neighborhood full of criminals he/she might get influenced to do evil things by trying to fit in. If he/she grew up around many people with good intentions their nice habits could persuade one to do the right thing. Yet again no one can really say because some people start off evil but later in life become good or vice versa.
ReplyDeleteAre people born good? Is a question that many people debate with. There is a belief within myself that no one is born a certain way. Everyone is simply birthed into this well with a clean slate. No one can be born good or bad. Every single trait and action that is displayed through a human is learned. Many sociologist and psychologist have conducted experiments showing that the behavior and characteristics of any human are learned. Basically stating that one cannot be born good or bad.Meaning that good or evil actions can be learned. The people in our society display what is good or evil because of the norms we are supposed to display in the world. actions one displays are good or bad implicating that our society will be the judge of what is good or evil.
ReplyDeletePeople aren't born good or evil. The definition of good and evil are based upon the opinion.
ReplyDeletePeople cultivate habits and traits through life experiences. No one is born with a certain mindset. Individuals aren't labeled good or evil when birthed their labeled by sex. People are with the choice of what path they would like to go down. Individuals are born with choices and the choices that one make displays to society what kind of person they are whether its good or evil society is the only judge of that.
Some human beings are born good and others are born bad. From as little as infancy humans are classified either as good or bad by their behavioral patterns. For example children deemed as by actions such as crying , yelling or being quiet. No one can completely predict if a human will be good or bad when born ,their fate is determined by a variety of factor in the end only God can judge ones good deeds and wrong
ReplyDeletePeople are born pure and inessence good. The way we grow up doesnt completly determine who you are or weither you are good or bad. For instance some one who is surrounded by horrible poeple as they grow up may become a police officer to counteract the "badness" they were forced to witness in their up bringing. However, a person may have grown up in the most lovely of lives and end up being sick of the "goody-two-shoes" life they have in front of them and start doing drugs and kiling for them. If a human being is the blunt, no grey area, no inbetween, "Good or Bad" much of that decision is just that... a decision. Iv experienced enough in this intersting life to know that even the people we as a society have classified as "bad" or even horrible have a good trait in them. Iv also see someone we look up to, have in such high regard, have something about them that is just no good and no good will come from it. These two scenarios make me question is good and evil even really exsist, and if its simpily perspective..
ReplyDeletePeople are born innocence not good or bad. Your behavior depend on the way you are judged. Everyone has evil and good ways but that does not mean you are always evil or good. Sometimes your surrondings determine how you act if a person is always around misery, yelling, fighting etc. they will become evil thats all they are use to. being goos having a postive attitude, doing the right thing can make a good person. where you are little people have they own opinion of how your are but no one is born evil or good.
ReplyDeleteIt is best to say everyone is born innocent than to say everyone is born good. Nobody comes into this world with good or bad in them. The good or bad is introduced to them as they grow, where the cause be the environment around them or life experiences. Some become "bad" because of negative influences in their life and others become bad because of things they have gone through that push them to believe being bad is best route. The same goes for the "good" people. In the movie, "Mean Girls", Cady Heron came to high school as an innocent girl and began to display bad behaviors after being introduce to Regina George and the other Plastics. Their bad habits rubbed off on Cady which caused those at her school to view her as "bad". However, just like in society today, one person did not just come out and label Cady as "bad". Instead, the whole school (society) disliked Cady's actions and turned against her.
ReplyDeleteEveryone is born malicious and evil. Everyone naturally has those human traits of greed, selfishness, and vanity. One can only become good through proper guidance and tribulations. For instance, Superman was born from a world of evil, power-hungry, control freaks. The Kryptonians were born power-hungry and its due to this trait that their planet began to deteriorate. In an effort to save his only son, Superman's Kryptonian father put him on a spaceship toward earth. While on earth, Superman learned traits of goodness disgusted as a simple farm boy. Being instilled with these traits, he was able to rise to become the Man of Steel. Those who aren't taught how to learn from bad experiences naturally convert back to their natural state of mind.
ReplyDeleteOne is not naturally born either good or bad however the environment surrounded had an actual affect their characteristic. There are positive and negative impacts that influencing human behavior. I do feel that some people will innately turn away from what we might call natural goodness or morality. This is in addition to the possibility that an evil environment can in fact help create a bad person or make a bad person worse. As the old said: “It's better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you'll drift in that direction.” It express the ideology of living in the good environment will cause good outcome.
ReplyDeletePeople are not born either good nor bad, they are like a blank page waiting to see what the author (parent) has in store for them. An example being, a baby being born into a racist household. The baby doesn't know what racism is, they are taught it. That being said, being good or bad is not a born trait, it is a learned characteristic. The only ones who judge whether a person is good or bad is society itself. We as people judge others, at times we even judge ourselves so we are relentless towards each other.
ReplyDeletePeople are neither born Good nor Bad. It’s the environment that they are brought up in that will determine if an individual is good or bad. But the individual has the opportunity to change the outcome and do something good in their life, because it isn’t predetermined. No one is born evil, but that trait is instilled in them at birth. It just takes something to happen to that person to bring that evil out. Take the recent bullying stories for example the kids that are doing the bullying aren’t evil by nature. It’s what they go through at home, that makes them evil. The bully at school, bullying the other kids can be the one getting bullied at home. So all they do is unleash their pain onto the other kids.
ReplyDeleteAre people born good , see that is a tricky question because people are born into sin but that does not make them a bad person it doesnt make them a good one either all i can really say is that people are born innocent in a way because your innocents is not taken away until later in life situations. Being evil is a learnned behavior because a person has to see something and judge weather it is good or evil and the only person that can say weather its good or evil is your self
ReplyDeleteThe question of whether a. Person is born forbade is somewhat connected to family. A person couldbe corrupt. Badly or a person could simplybe made that way. A person is not born good or bad. It takes how strong and controlled a person is. For example, Elizabeth although raised in poor condition and having gone through horrible things like being homeless for a while is still kind hearted even though her life before she was adopted was not good. She had a strong character and she had controlled over herself even as a child. However Victor, who was born under such wonderful condition, with such a kind family iswhatt I would considered as bad. He is the wrist bad, that messes with nature and anyone that tries to undo nature is as bad as it gets. These examples lead me to believe that good and bad is not born but learned. And the person that is affected the most is the one that is in charge of being good and bad.
ReplyDeletePeople are born, they are not born evil or good they are just born. Both good and bad behaviors have to be learned. A human life form is born and the life it is born into is surrounded with evil, just look at the news, that human life form decides whether or not it wants to be good or evil no other person can make this decision for them. In today's society ,society decides what good an evil is with their opinions ,not necessarily focused on facts just focusing on how society perceived he topic at hand. No person should determine whether something is good or evil until they can explain whether they are good or evil with factual evidence.
ReplyDeleteDue to evil and good being a learned behavior, one can not be born good because its up to the teacher of whether it will be one or the other. A person can only be born good if the teacher has good intentions for a child to be good and can only be born evil if the teacher has bad intentions for that child to participate in evil activities. The person who decides what can be classified as evil and good once again has to do with the teacher. For example, In some homes students at Westlake, they are allowed to curse in front of their parents while on the other hand some are not allowed to do this. The teacher dictates everything from good to evil as well as what should be classified within each category.
ReplyDeleteEveryone is born good even though each is born into a world of sin. However, remaining good and becoming evil are behaviors that are learned throughout an individual's life. Through life experiences and what that person is taught, they choose to become evil or remain good. It is the individual that characterizes themselves as either good or evil.
