Who, What, When, and Why?

"My person was hideous and my stature gigantic. What did this mean? Who was I? What was I? Whence did I come? What was my destination? These questions continually recurred, but I was unable to solve them" (Shelley 115).

"CURSED, CURSED CREATOR! why did I live? Why, in that instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had so wantonly bestowed? I know not: despair had not yet taken possession of  me; my feelings were those of rage and revenge" (Shelley 121).

Throughout the novel and throughout life we often find ourselves questioning ourselves with rhetorical questions about life, our nature, and purpose, what causes this? Do we ask the rhetorical questions because we are afraid of the true answer? And when faced with adversity and our insecurities why do we question our Creator?

  1. The constant questioning in our lives is caused by the desire to be successful and accepted by society. Rhetorical questions allow individuals to discover what they are actually searching for. The more a person questions, the more they discover about their aspirations and desires for bigger and better things. The Creator, in a persons mind is the reason that all things happen. Individuals question God because it is said that "He knows all things before they happen". When questioning Him, it is a cry for help. "Why didn't He fix the situation" or "What did the person do to deserve the punishment in the situation?" Asking God questions in a time of need is often used as a coping mechanism in tough situations. With no one left to turn to, individuals rest their faith in one that will always be there.

  2. The questioning is to wonder why something happened, why did it happen to that person. We can not see the creator we just want a answer for good or bad reason. Rhetorical questions are to see if we are really doing the right thing. The creator is in mind and already have a goal for us we ask questions to advance to see what is going to happen. We continue to ask because only the Creator know.

  3. The causes of this would be that every human being wants an answer, leading to discovering new things. that is how we move on in life and develop every moment on this earth. The reason of asking ourselves rhetorical questions is to see if we can get life right, to see if we made the right decisions and choices in life, because most people worry about following instead of leading (even though we still follow but follow the right leaders). We question our creator because we have run out of resources to find the answer so we question him for help and to lead us in the right direction to help us find the answer that we are looking for.
