The Guilt Trip...

Throughout Chapters 8-10, one reads about the murderous events, and we often hear the names Justine, William and Victor, and we find their true thoughts and how they think.

Why does Victor go to nature as an escape tool for horrendous guilt that he holds over his head? Does his guilt connect to reasons why he created Frankenstein?

  1. Victor Frankenstein did not make the monster (because it has no name) out of guilt because he had nothing to feel guilty for at the time in which he had decided to create him. Victor created the monster out of greed for knowledge and power. He made the monster because he wanted to create another species in which he would be seen as to them as their god and creator. Victor retreats in to a natural environment out of guilt because he did not want anyone else to get hurt. He felt as if Justine's death as well as his brother's was his fault and at the same time goes into denial about it because his fault. He could have told his family members about the monster that threatened their safety and he could have told the truth in order to spare Justine's life but he chose not to for fear of how people would react to what he had done. Victor's actions from the beginning have been no doubt selfish but he escapes into nature in order to "protect" those around him because he doesn't want anyone else to get hurt as well as not wanting anyone to find out what he's up to.

  2. Victor uses nature as an escape tool because the guilt he felt after making Frankenstein. Disturbing the living nature caused victor to feel guilty about making a monster that destroys. The outside nature shows victor the past before he made the monster when the world was pure. The nature makes victor feel peaceful which is why he uses it as an escape tool.

  3. I agree with Yaminah, Victor feels guilty after having created the monster. He disrupts the cycle of nature not knowing the consequences that can arise. After the monster proves harmful for Victors' friends and family, he realizes his mistake in creating life and begins to feel guilty. Therefore, he uses nature as an escape tool as way of apologizing and showing submission to it as he realizes that one should not attempt to alter nature.

  5. Agreeing with Yaminah and Niamaka, Victor went to nature to be reminded of its purity and beauty. This somewhat eased his mind, yet not all the way. He then started thinking of what he has done. being reminded that he created the monster that has caused so much havoc making the beauty of nature almost pain him. The guilt that he felt had no connection for the reason he made the monster.
